As a part of the NPMA’s National Pest Management Month, April 22-26 has been designated National Bed Bug Awareness Week. It is the perfect time of the year, before the busy spring and summer season, to learn some great tips to control bed bugs and prevent an infestation in your Kansas home or business. Bed bugs have been around for many years and as they continue to spread through homes and businesses, interfering with our everyday life, it is important to educate yourself on ways to avoid bed bug encounters.
We recently welcomed Scout, our newest bed bug sniffing canine, to the pest control team at Schendel Pest Services. Scout, a two-year-old pure beagle, was adopted from a family who could no longer have pets. We put him through bed bug detection training to ensure he would sniff out bed bugs with the same, high level of accuracy as Patches and we are happy to report he is ready to get to work!
The holidays are almost here, which means a busy season of travel is in store for individuals, couples and families. For those who are on the other side of the coin and are welcoming guests into your hotel, you are likely preparing for the arrival of guests. In addition to readying rooms, hotel management and staff should also be prepared to defend against bed bugs with a detailed bed bug response plan.

While some dogs spend the day lounging at home, there’s a new team of dogs who have a very important but very unusual job. Yes, dogs with jobs are a new phenomenon in the pest control industry. To be more specific, we are talking about trained bed bug sniffing dogs. Bed bug dogs are proving to be a quicker and more efficient way to inspect homes and businesses for bed bug infestations.
