Cockroaches

What is a German cockroach?
The German cockroach is the one of the most common of the Cockroach species and are commonly referred to as roaches. Adults are 1/4 to 5/8 of an inch in length, and light brown to tan in color and have two dark longitudinal stripes on the pronotal shield. Because they undergo simple metamorphosis the nymphal instars resemble the adult. A gravid female can carry as many as 40 eggs in her egg capsule known as an ootheca. There can be as many as three to four generations per year from one female. Needless to say this roach is a prolific breeder as is the case with most insect pests.
What is an American cockroach?
The American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, occurs both outdoors and indoors . Adults are reddish-brown, edges of pronotum are light colored and is the largest of the common roaches (1 to 1 1/2 inches in length at maturity). Because they undergo simple metamorphosis the nymphal instars resemble the adult. A gravid female carry the egg cases around for about 6 days and then cement them to a protected surface where they incubate for about 2 months or longer. Each egg capsule contains as many as 16 eggs inside. Immature cockroaches emerge from egg cases in 6 to 8 weeks and require 6 to 12 months to mature.
Why do I have them?
German cockroaches are infamous carpet baggers who will hitch a ride in boxes, on clothing, or bags, and it only takes one gravid female to get a roach infestation started. Provided the environment is suitable German cockroaches can expand in numbers exponentially. They prefer a place that provides warmth, humidity, food, water, and harborage.
The American cockroach commonly breeds in sewer systems and underground utility networks, from which it then may invade structures. It is the most common cockroach species in city sewer systems. It favors microhabitats with high humidity like sewers, steam tunnels, boiler rooms, and basements, especially around pipes and drains
Are they dangerous?
German cockroaches are linked to outbreaks of illness including, but not limited to, salmonella poisoning, and the triggering of asthma attacks.
The American cockroach can harbor numerous bacterial and viral pathogens in its feces or on its body. It can contaminate food and food-preparation items and surfaces with disease organisms that result in food poisoning, dysentery, or diarrhea.
