Rats

What are rats?
There are two rat species that are of particular concern as pests, Norway rats and roof rats. They are both considered commensal rodents, which means they share the table with humans and are the only ones benefiting from the relationship.
Norway rats are usually 7-9 inches in length, and have course shaggy brown hair. They have blunt noses and a 6-8 inch tail. Droppings have blunt ends, are capsule shaped and measure 3/4 inch in length. Some of the tell tale signs these rodents are present include, gnaw marks, droppings, tracks, burrows and rub or grease marks.
Roof rats measure 6-8 inches in length, and have smooth brown fur. They have pointed noses and a 7-10 inch tail. Droppings are 1/2 inch with pointed ends. Unlike Norway rats their burrowing counterparts, roof rats prefer to nest in the upper parts of structures. The tell tale signs they are present are the same as above.
Are they dangerous?
Rats are known to carry disease, and they also damage and destroy food and property.

Can I do it myself?
Due to the complexity of treatment and the time required, rats are generally not a pest many people have success in eradicating.
