Why DIY Pest Control Does Not Work

There are many things that occur in our day to day lives that only take a moment of time and a bit of effort to fix. Take that old window screen with all those holes and tears. Did you know that it is actually not all that difficult to pick up some screen and a screen repair kit at the local hardware store and fix it yourself? It is pretty simple to do, and it only takes a few minutes! Or how about that dripping faucet that has kept you awake for the past week with its incessant drip, drip, drip. That can be a cinch to fix also. A few dollars at the hardware store and a new washer in the faucet head is typically all it takes to be able to enjoy a restful night’s sleep again. Unfortunately, not all issues you may face will be that easy to take care of.
Take your car, for example. You start your car and let in run in hopes to have a clear windshield and be toasty warm on your ride to work, and ten minutes later you realize that there is absolutely no heat radiating from your car. You may even know enough about cars to understand that it is probably just the thermostat that has decided not to work anymore, but not many of us would understand exactly how to tear apart that car and find that thermostat and replace it properly. Certainly, if the issue with your car were any bigger than that, you would have to call in a professional to get the job done safely and completely.
Dealing with pests is much like dealing with your car. There may be a few things that you can do to patch things up and keep things moving; but overall, when dealing with pests it is best to call in the professionals. Let’s take mice for example. Sure you can run to the hardware store and buy a few traps and throw them around your home, and you may even catch a few! The trouble is, when you have one mouse there are usually many more hiding behind the walls. These creatures are prolific breeders and typically will nest with mom, dad, and many children. Once the kids grow up they just pick a mate and spread out to a new nest nearby. Sure it may be possible to catch a few in those DIY traps, but you aren’t even touching the root of the problem like how did they get in in the first place or where are all the nests that are well hidden in your walls.
Maybe a mouse isn’t your thing. Maybe you are dealing with termites or ants. These creatures have DIY products available that claim to be effective in treating them. The truth is termites and ants are alike in that they both typically form their colonies deep underground or deep inside the wood structure of your house. The DIY products may be effective in killing the few that you may see, but even if you kill a few hundred it won’t even make a dent in the problem. Both these creatures are very social and build colonies numbering in the thousands to hundreds of thousands. If you do not destroy the queen and the entire colony, then they will just keep coming and coming. All the DIY sprays you can find will not penetrate deep enough to reach the queen.
While there are many things that you can tackle by yourself, when dealing with pests it is best to contact a professional like Schendel Pest Services.
