Schendel Offers Tips To Help You Prevent Cockroach Infestations

10/26/2011

In recent weeks, Schendel Pest Services has been flooded with phone calls from homeowners throughout Kansas City, Lawrence, Topeka and all across Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas regarding the nasty, little scavengers known as cockroaches. Just like many other pests that commonly invade homes, such as spiders and mice, cockroaches are simply searching for food, shelter, water and humidity and there is no better place to find all of these essential amenities than in the comfort of our homes. Schendel, a longtime Kansas City pest control company, would like to offer homeowners some tips to help you prevent cockroaches from making your home their own.

  • Seal any cracks and crevices with high-quality caulking; paying special attention to around door and window moldings, inside cabinets and storage closets, around baseboards and pipes and the back splash near the sinks in your kitchen and bathroom

  • Empty trash receptacles daily and make sure you use trash cans with tightly sealing lids

  • Keep food stored in plastic or glass containers with lids or store in the refrigerator

  • Clean food crumbs and spills immediately from surfaces and sinks

  • Dispose of empty cardboard boxes

  • Use screens in windows and install draft sweeps onto doors

  • Place mesh screen over drains, which is a common and one of the most disgusting entry point for roaches

  • Get rid of clutter where cockroaches can hide

  • Keep all areas of your home clean and dry

Both the German cockroach and the American cockroach, the most common roaches found in Kansas City, will eat nearly anything, including the foods we eat as well as fabrics, glue, book bindings, hair and plants materials, making cockroach prevention extremely difficult, but not impossible. If your best attempts to prevent and get rid of cockroaches fail, Schendel is always ready to help.
