Just like the drugstore beetle, the cigarette beetle is part of the group of insects known as pantry pests. The cigarette beetle got its name from its love of dried tobacco, but this beetle will also feed on book bindings and stored products that are commonly found in homes. Adult cigarette beetles are yellowish to reddish-brown in color, oval shaped and are about 1/10th of an inch in length. A female cigarette beetle can lay up to 100 eggs directly on the food product from which her larvae will feed. The worm-shaped larvae are slightly smaller than the adults and are a creamy white color. The larvae can feed on a variety of foods including pet food, dried and processed foods such as grain, raisins, rice, pasta and seeds. Along with food, these beetles occasionally will feed on furniture stuffing and dried flower arrangements. Cigarette beetles are active all year long, but are most active during the fall and winter months. They prefer temperatures over 65°F and areas with low light. Cigarette beetles are considered a nuisance pest as they can congregate in large numbers near windows and doors.
Cigarette beetles will infest areas where dried tobacco is stored as well as invade homes to feed on cereal, flour and other stored products that are commonly found in pantries.
Cigarette beetles are not dangerous to people or pets. They are considered a nuisance when they infest our food supply as well as our pet’s food, creating costly waste.
Because cigarette beetles can infest a wide variety of foods, they can be very difficult to eliminate. Our services to get rid of cigarette beetles include the necessary products and follow up visits for one fee. Our cigarette beetle treatment methods consist of the following:
Initial Service - Detailed inspection of the interior and exterior of your home, then a targeted treatment of all areas where pest activity is present. Each Initial Service includes the application of seven exclusive Pest Guard steps, designed to rid your home of unwanted cigarette beetles and keep them away.
Follow Up - Quarterly interior/exterior or exterior-only services will be scheduled as part of our annual Integrated Pest Management program. All Schendel Premium Care customers enjoy the benefit of our PestZero Guarantee. If pests return in between visits, Schendel returns for free.
Controlling cigarette beetles and other pantry pests can be very difficult and is not something people have much luck with on their own. Do-it-yourself methods and products are available, but are frequently ineffective and can actually make the problem worse. Also, over-the-counter pesticides can be dangerous to people and pets, especially around sources of food, if mixed improperly or misused.
Schendel is 100% committed to helping you ASAP. In most cases, we can respond the same or very next day.

"Derek always shows up when he says he will, and explains what he did while he was here. I appreciate the extras like putting on booties before he enters our home, and always asking if I've noticed any issues. He is knowledgeable, professional and polite, and for that reason I always recommend Schendel Pest to my friends and neighbors."
