Cigarette Beetles In Kansas City

What are Cigarette Beetles?

Just like the drugstore beetle, the cigarette beetle is part of the group of insects known as pantry pests. The cigarette beetle got its name from its love of dried tobacco, but this beetle will also feed on book bindings and stored products that are commonly found in homes. Adult cigarette beetles are yellowish to reddish-brown in color, oval shaped and are about 1/10th of an inch in length. A female cigarette beetle can lay up to 100 eggs directly on the food product from which her larvae will feed on. The worm-shaped larvae are slightly smaller than the adults and are a creamy white color. The larvae can feed on a variety of foods including pet food, dried and processed foods such as grain, raisins, rice, pasta and seeds. Along with food, these beetles occasionally will feed on furniture stuffing and dried flower arrangements. Cigarette beetles are active all year long, but are most active during the fall and winter months. They prefer temperatures over 65°F and areas with low light. Cigarette beetles are considered a nuisance pest as they can congregate in large numbers near windows and doors.

Why do I have them?

Cigarette beetles will infest areas where dried tobacco is stored as well as invade homes to feed on cereal, flour and other stored products that are commonly found in pantries.

Are they dangerous?

Cigarette beetles are not dangerous to people or pets. They are considered a nuisance when they infest our food supply as well as our pet’s food, creating costly waste.

How do I get rid of Cigarette Beetles?

Can I do it myself?

Controlling cigarette beetles and other pantry pests can be very difficult and is not something people have much luck with on their own. Do-it-yourself methods and products are available, but are frequently ineffective and can actually make the problem worse. Also, over-the-counter pesticides can be dangerous to people and pets, especially around sources of food, if mixed improperly or misused.
