House Centipedes

What are house centipedes?

Easily recognized by their many legs, these creatures are commonly found throughout most of the United States. House centipedes are yellowish to dark brown and may have darker stripes or markings. Their segmented bodies are long and flat and can range from 1/8th of an inch to 6 inches in length. Although the word centipede means “100 legs”, most of these pests have between 15-177 legs. House centipedes feed on silverfish, carpet beetle larvae, firebrats, cockroaches, bed bugs, spiders and other small arthropods. House centipedes are part of the family Chilopoda and are not really an insect, but are instead an arthropod relative.

Why do I have them?

House centipedes live in damp places such as rotting logs, under stones, in mulch or yard clippings and in trash. They are nocturnal creatures that primarily stay outdoors. But when conditions are right, they may come inside. House centipedes can enter our homes through cracks and other small openings and prefer the moisture of basements or closets if it mimics their natural environment.

Are they dangerous?

The first pair of legs on the house centipede form claw-like poison fangs. Although their bite can be painful, there are no long-lasting effects.

Can I do it myself?

Controlling house centipedes using do-it-yourself methods is not usually effective. Locating the source of the infestation indoors and out is the key to their eradication – something that Schendel’s experienced pest control professionals are trained to do.

How soon can you get there?

Schendel is 100% committed helping you ASAP. In most cases, we can respond the same or very next day.

Is the treatment safe?

Schendel uses the least amount of material possible while still resolving the problem. We utilize natural products, baits and mechanical means as a form of treatment as much as possible. When conventional materials are required, we follow very stringent guidelines for the use of the product so that it poses no threat to people, pets or plants. All products are found to be effective and registered by the EPA. Our service technicians will inform you of any specific safety measures that need to be taken.

How much does it cost?

We have standard pricing for all of our pest services, based on average size homes under 3500 square feet and where the infestation does not require more than the standard number of services. We will always make you aware of any price changes before we start your service. Sign up for your FREE quote today and see how much you can save with Schendel.

What is the Guarantee?

Schendel offers customers an exclusive PestZero Guarantee. We will target the source and eliminate your pest problem. If pests return, Schendel returns for free. Guaranteed.

How can I prevent centipedes in the future?

Pest problems can be difficult to prevent. Many of our clients choose to continue service to keep house centipedes and other household pests out.
