The German cockroach is one of the most common of the Cockroach species and are commonly referred to as roaches. Adults are 1/4 to 5/8 of an inch in length and light brown to tan in color and have two dark longitudinal stripes on the pronotal shield. Because they undergo simple metamorphosis, the nymphal instars resemble the adult. A gravid female can carry as many as 40 eggs in her egg capsule known as an ootheca. There can be as many as three to four generations per year from one female. Needless to say this roach is a prolific breeder as is the case with most insect pests.
The American cockroach, Periplaneta americana, occurs both outdoors and indoors. Adults are reddish-brown, edges of pronotum are light colored and this roach is the largest of the common roaches (1 to 1 1/2 inches in length at maturity). Because they undergo simple metamorphosis, the nymphal instars resemble the adult. A gravid female carries the egg cases around for about 6 days and then cements them to a protected surface where they incubate for about 2 months or longer. Each egg capsule contains as many as 16 eggs inside. Immature cockroaches emerge from egg cases in 6 to 8 weeks and require 6 to 12 months to mature.
German cockroaches are infamous carpet baggers who will hitch a ride in boxes, on clothing or bags and it only takes one gravid female to get a roach infestation started. Provided the environment is suitable, German cockroaches can expand in numbers exponentially. They prefer a place that provides warmth, humidity, food, water and harborage.
The American cockroach commonly breeds in sewer systems and underground utility networks, from which it then may invade structures. It is the most common cockroach species in city sewer systems. It favors microhabitats with high humidity like sewers, steam tunnels, boiler rooms and basements, especially around pipes and drains.
German cockroaches are linked to outbreaks of illness including but not limited to: salmonella poisoning and the triggering of asthma attacks.
The American cockroach can harbor numerous bacterial and viral pathogens in its feces or on its body. It can contaminate food and food-preparation items and surfaces with disease organisms that result in food poisoning, dysentery, or diarrhea.
German cockroaches are extremely difficult to control. That's why our service includes the necessary products and follow up visits for one fee. Our treatment methods consist of the following:
Initial Service - Detailed inspection of the interior and exterior of your home, then a targeted treatment of all areas where activity is present. Each Initial Service includes the application of seven exclusive Pest Guard steps, designed to rid your home of unwanted pests and keep them away.
Follow Up - Quarterly interior/exterior or exterior-only services will be scheduled as part of our annual Integrated Pest Management program. All Schendel Premium Care customers enjoy the benefit of our PestZero Guarantee. If pests return in between visits, Schendel returns for free.
Due to the complexity of treatment and the time required, German Cockroaches are generally not a pest many people have success in eradicating on their own. Beware when purchasing pesticides and other products online as many are not effective. Pesticides can be harmful to people and pets if they are misused or mixed improperly.
